Private notebooks
The following administrative directive serves to secure network operation at Universität Hamburg. It was adopted by the director of the RRZ on 25 July 2005.
University staff may be granted access to the Universität Hamburg network for justified use of their own computer when the following conditions are met. When resources are limited, the connection of Universität Hamburg computers must be given priority over private computers. The following regulations must be observed when connecting private notebooks to the University network:
1. Access to the Universität Hamburg network is granted when
a) current operating systems are regularly updated
b) a current virus scanner has been installed on the notebook, and regular scans are conducted (at least once a week) and
c) the device, along with the hardware address of its network card, has been entered into the relevant Universität Hamburg network database.
[Universität Hamburg provides Sophos antivirus software to it staff. Users are personally responsible for the required (virus) updates on their notebook. Instructions for using Sophos is provided on the RRZ website.]
2. A valid uni username is required to be connected to the Universität Hamburg network.
3. A connection in the office space must be available for use. Existing network connections may not be disconnected under any circumstances! The local IT officer responsible must always be informed.
4. Access can be withdrawn for breach of this directive or for operational reasons.
5. An additional adapter for the network card may be required to connect to the network. In such cases, the responsible administrator must be asked whether a converter or adapter can be provided. Use of private network components (active components such as converters, hubs, and switches) is forbidden.
6. As a rule, no support will be provided for problems arising with private computers.
7. Instructions from the RRZ or representative authorized by the RRZ must be followed with regard to the use of private computers in the Universität Hamburg network.
8. Users of private computers are liable for damage to Universität Hamburg or third parties arising from the use of their own computer.
9. Universität Hamburg is not liable for any damage to private computers arising from to connection or operation with the Universität Hamburg network.
10. Users consent to the storage of their personal data collected for the operation of their private computer and their use to maintain proper operation.
11. Permission to use a private computer in the Universität Hamburg network ends immediately on the termination of the employment relationship (end of employment contract, etc.).
12. Users are prepared to allow their system to be examined for the purposes of troubleshooting, maintaining the uninterrupted operation of the network, and—where necessary—undertaking additional configuration specifications and modified operational processes.
