Subversion service policy
Version 0.7 9 November 2009 Thies Meincke / RRZ
The Regional Computing Center (RRZ) at Universität Hamburg operates a centralized file-version management service for the University. The open-source program Subversion is used for this purpose. Use of this service is subject to the following conditions:
General
The regulations listed here for use of the RRZ’s Subversion server supplement the RRZ’s rules of operation, particularly the Universität Hamburg net policy, and the corresponding implementation rules. Serious disregard for these regulations and provisions may result in the affected repository being blocked or deleted by the RRZ.
The RRZ’s use of the Subversion server
System work on the RRZ’s Subversion server is carried out during the system administrators’ usual working hours. If a disruption of the affected server is anticipated during work on the system, the work will be carried out during the hours when the server is less utilized where possible.
Bug fixes and security patches of minor importance are regularly conducted approximately once a month. These will be announced by the RRZ a few days in advance.
The RRZ will implement patches for serious vulnerabilities as soon as possible, potentially without prior announcement.
The RRZ conducts updates and upgrades of the Subversion server at irregular intervals. The RRZ will announce this planned work at least one week in advance. Where specified, anticipated durations for system downtime for such work are estimates based on experience and may not be strictly adhered to by the RRZ. The RRZ explicitly advises that updates or upgrades may lead to incompatibilities with Subversion clients or their configuration previously in use.
The RRZ cannot anticipate these incompatibilities in advance nor subsequently eliminate them. The RRZ will announce ahead of time which updates or upgrades will be carried out.
The RRZ creates a backup copy of the whole repository on a daily basis.
The email addresses for the username under which the Subversion repository has been set up (kennung@uni-hamburg.de) and an optional alternative University address will be added to the Subversion mailing list maintained by the RRZ. This mailing list is used to send messages concerning all RRZ Subversion servers and their repositories and particularly for announcing planned system maintenance or version changes.
Registered users of a repository will also become members of the mailing list under kennung@uni-hamburg.de (kennung@studium.uni-hamburg.de for student usernames).
Use of the Subversion server
A valid project reference name is required to apply for a Subversion repository. The repository is linked to the existence of the project reference name; should the project reference name be blocked, the repository will also be blocked. Deletion of the project name will result in deletion of the repository.
The installation and configuration of a Subversion client is not usually carried out by the RRZ. If the RRZ has relevant experience or information, this can be requested via the RRZ service line.
As a rule, only data and information with relevant content for academia, research, teaching, or administration can be stored in repositories on the RRZ Subversion server.
This service may not be used for any commercial purpose.
Users are responsible for complying with data protection, copyright laws, and license conditions for the contents of the repository.
The owner of the project reference name created for which the repository was created is responsible for the repository’s content, even when other users (usernames) have write permission for the repository.
