Windows Updates: Changing the Restart Behavior
16 April 2026, by RRZ-ServiceLine
From now on, Windows updates will be installed on devices managed by the RRZ (e.g. FMD, FMDmA) immediately after they are approved. We recommend that you perform the required restart yourself as soon as possible. A forced restart will occur at the latest three days later, with a notification sent 15 minutes in advance. In the meantime, you will receive multiple reminders that a restart is necessary. You can also see that a restart is required by the icon next to the clock:

Windows Updates are usually released once a month – on the Monday morning following the second Tuesday of the month.
If a computer is not turned on that Monday, the installation will take place the next time the computer is started, and a forced restart will occur 3 days later.
The RRZ generally aims to keep the number of reboots to a minimum. However, the decision on whether a reboot is necessary lies with the manufacturers of the hardware, operating system and software. Please restart your computer as soon as possible after receiving prompts to do so. This ensures that the necessary security updates take effect.
