General setting parameters for e-mail programs

For experienced users, we have compiled the basic configuration information for accessing public.uni-hamburg.de. Below you will also find illustrated instructions for common email programs and apps.

Incoming server settings:

Name: public.uni-hamburg.de
Protocol: IMAP
Port: 993
Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal Password (Login,Plain)
Username: your B-Kennung

Outgoing server settings:

Protokoll: SMTP
Port: 587
Security: STARTTLS
Authentication method: Normal Password (Login,Plain)

Transmission protocols

The only available transfer protocol for retrieving e-mails is IMAPS, the secure variant of IMAP, via port 993. The IMAP protocol has the advantage that all mails, incoming, outgoing, and the recycle-bin are located on the server. In the e-mail program, the e-mails are cached locally, so that you can work without a network connection.

To send e-mails, a TLS-encrypted SMTP connection via port 587 is used.
