The Android operating system for smartphones and tablet PCs is developed by the Open Handset Alliance under the leadership of Google. Since the launch of the first smartphone running Android OS in late 2008, numerous releases have been published, some of which included significant changes from the previous version.

Device manufacturers who install the Android OS on their devices have the option to customize it to their own needs. This can mean that menu items are renamed or new ones added, additional software is pre-installed, or entirely new user interfaces are developed.

Due to the circumstances described above, the RRZ is unable to provide a universally applicable, always up-to-date guide for configuring the Android system. The manual configuration guide linked above therefore serves more as a general guide to configuration than as a step-by-step instruction manual.
