Wi-Fi
You can find the latest instructions for setting up your eduroam access for different types of devices here
Eligible Users
- Members (staff and students) of the University of Hamburg (UHH)
- Members of an institution participating in the eduroam network
- UHH guests with a guest ID for the “GUEST” SSID
- UHH guests with a “course ID”
Requirements / Technical Information
- You have a valid ID from the University of Hamburg or an institution participating in the eduroam roaming network.
- The Wi-Fi network connection is configured to automatically obtain an IP address via DHCP; this corresponds to the standard configuration of many operating systems.
- Connections to all UHH SSIDs can be established using the 802.11a (5 GHz) and 802.11g (2.4 GHz) standards. At some locations, the 802.11n standard (2.4 + 5 GHz) can also be used.
- The RRZ tests the tools, scripts, and software offered on the RRZ website with the operating system versions supported by the respective manufacturer. This always assumes that all current security patches have been installed.
- If you encounter problems using the access solutions provided by the RRZ, please check whether the operating system you are using is still supported by the manufacturer and whether all security updates for it have been installed.
The quality of a Wi-Fi connection depends both on the hardware used and, to a significant extent, on local conditions. For example, the building’s structure, the number of other Wi-Fi users, interference from other wireless sources, and other factors can significantly affect connection quality. Please note the “General Information on Wi-Fi” at UHH listed below.
Establishing the Connection
The UHH’s access points broadcast different SSIDs. Which one is right for you depends on your status and the desired login procedure. The SSIDs of the UHH, the respective user groups, and the login procedures are listed below.
| SSID | Users | Login Procedure |
| eduroam |
- UHH staff and students - Members of an eduroam partner institution - UHH guests with a “course ID” |
802.1X authentication |
| UHH | - UHH staff and students | VPN client |
| GUEST | - UHH guests with an ID for the “GUEST” | SSID Web authentication |
802.1X authentication for UHH members
- For all operating systems for which the RRZ offers preconfigured software or scripts, please follow the instructions here.
- For all operating systems for which the RRZ does not offer preconfigured software or scripts, please configure the settings manually using the following parameters:
| Authentication | WPA2 |
| Encryption | AES |
| EAP Type | EAP-TTLS |
| External Identity | anonymous@uni-hamburg.de |
|
Certificate (Root certificate of the delivered certificate chain of the Auth Server) |
|
| Authentication Method | PAP |
| ID/Password | User ID (in the format b******@uni-hamburg.de) with corresponding password |
| Domain | uni-hamburg.de |
| CN of the authentication server | roamrad.rrz.uni-hamburg.de |
VPN Client
You can find more information about VPN access to the University of Hamburg’s data network on the following RRZ webpage: VPN Service at the University of Hamburg
Download
The RRZ offers preconfigured software and scripts as well as instructions for download on the Downloads and Links webpage, as well as via the Wi-Fi homepage. To do this, please connect your device to the SSID “UHH” and visit the page http://wpad.wlan.uni-hamburg.de.
Proxy Server
If you use the University of Hamburg’s Wi-Fi for internet access, you have the option to use the RRZ’s proxy server. The settings should be configured so that the proxy server is set up automatically. Depending on your operating system and web browser, this can be done in different ways.
The following link provides instructions that describe the configuration process for several operating system and browser combinations:
You also have the option to manually enter the University of Hamburg’s proxy server. The Regional Computing Center’s proxy server can be accessed at the following address:
- Server: proxy.uni-hamburg.de
- Port: 3128
General Information About the Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi at the UHH is primarily intended to provide connectivity for university members’ personal devices (“bring your own device”). The main goal is to enable students to use the university’s fast network for their studies using their familiar work environment (laptop, tablet, etc.). Staff members can also use the Wi-Fi, but should prefer a wired connection for their work computer. Wired connections (“Ethernet connections”) are not only faster but also generally much more reliable.
Staff members also have the option to request a wired connection for their personal laptop. This is always advisable when high transmission speeds and availability are a priority, i.e., for very “network-intensive” or communication-oriented workflows.
However, the UHH Wi-Fi should under no circumstances be used to provide devices for courses or during exams. Due to the high susceptibility to interference associated with wireless transmission via Wi-Fi, availability cannot be guaranteed at all locations at all times. Rather, transmission speeds may be throttled or connections may be interrupted at any time.
Wired connections provided by the UHH should therefore always be used for courses and for connecting staff workstations.
For a mobile device that is connected to the UHH data network via a cable, the Wi-Fi interface should be deactivated. Otherwise, interference with the device’s data network connection may occur due to the two active network interfaces.
