Information on Lock Management at UHH
Dear Colleagues,
Please note the following instructions so that we can unblock your computers as quickly as possible:
- Please direct any questions regarding the block list to entsperrung"AT"uni-hamburg.de. Please do not send inquiries to just one colleague; always use the distribution list mentioned above.
- Please resolve the issue with the blocked computers as soon as possible. We block the computers at the nearest router. This prevents communication with other subnets. However, in the event of a virus or Trojan infection, there is still a significant risk to other computers on the same subnet. Therefore, please act immediately.
- If affected computers cannot be inspected immediately, they should at least be shut down or disconnected from the network!
- When you send us an email requesting that the computers be unblocked, please include at least the computer’s IP address. It would also be helpful to indicate whether and what type of issue you found and resolved.
- If you wish to have multiple computers unblocked, please send a separate email for each blocked computer.
- After resolving the issue, turn the affected computer back on and reconnect it to the network.
- When we receive an email from you, we perform a basic test to verify that the computer is functioning normally again. This requires that the computer be turned on and connected to the network.
- Additionally, the computer must respond to ICMP ECHO requests; otherwise, we can only determine whether the computer is actually connected to the network with considerable effort. On Windows systems, you must explicitly allow this if the firewall is enabled!
Once your computer has been unblocked/unlocked, we will not send any further notification via email. We will contact you if there are outstanding issues, e.g., if we keep your computer blocked. Unblocked/unlocked computers are removed from the block list after approximately 15 minutes.
For computers at the University Medical Center Eppendorf, please direct your questions to net-security"AT"uke.uni-hamburg.de.
Unblocked computers will only be activated after review by the local data center.
Please be sure to install an up-to-date antivirus program on your computer. University members can obtain such a program free of charge through the RRZ (Sophos antivirus for Windows or for Mac OS X).
