Managed Linux Server
Upon request, the RRZ can provide you with a Linux server administered by the RRZ. The RRZ manages the following components:
Linux operating system (default: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS) with the available packages from the distribution
- Standard services (e.g. NTP, TSM, authentication, SSH, ...)
- Network connection
- Firewall
- User administration/rights structure
- Server equipment and monitoring (RAM, CPU, disk space)
The user's task is to install the desired application (unless it is a standard package from the relevant Linux distribution), configure and patch it.
The prerequisite for using a Managed Linux Server is therefore the ability to install, configure and patch Linux software.
The details of the distribution of tasks are agreed individually between the user and the RRZ for the application in question. First of all, a consultation takes place to determine whether a Managed Linux Server is suitable for the planned task and what such an agreement might look like. If, for example, permanent root rights are required for the installation or configuration of the planned application, it is not possible to separate the administration of the server (RRZ) and the administration of the service on the server. In this case, a Managed Linux Server would probably not be a suitable option.
The form for applying for a Managed Linux server can be found in the RRZ application forms.
We recommend that you arrange a consultation before submitting your application. If you would like to take advantage of this consultation offer, please contact the RRZ Linux team via the RRZ service line.
You can view an overview with information on your managed Linux servers on the MLS console (login with user ID).
The operating time of a managed Linux server is limited to one year, but can be easily extended via the MLS console. Servers with an expired operating time are switched off and stored for another 6 months before they are deleted. Reactivation is still possible during these 6 months, but not afterwards.
