1. Prepare iPhone/iPad
Goal: You want to prepare your device for the UHH 2FA process before you register your device with the 2FA app of the University of Hamburg.
Note
You can also use the 2-factor authentication (2FA) tutorial below to prepare iPads.
The screenshots of the guide were created using an iPhone X. Note that the layout may differ from your device's settings if you are using a different iPhone or iPad.
If you have already set up the iCloud Keychain, skip this step and go directly to the instruction on how to register your device with the 2FA app of the University of Hamburg.

Starting point:
- You are using an iPhone or iPad with iOS/iPadOS version 14.1 or higher. Your device is running a version below 14.1? Here you can find information on how to update your device.
- You have an Apple ID associated with the device you want to register.
- You have not yet prepared your device for 2FA, i.e. you have not yet activated iCloud Keychain.
- You have already activated the iCloud Keychain? Then skip this point and go directly to the second step: Register device.

To use two-factor authentication on an iPhone or iPad, iCloud Keychain must be enabled.
The iCloud Keychain stores passwords as well as other security information and synchronizes this data with all devices linked via the same Apple ID.

To get to the iCloud Keychain settings, first open the Settings app on your device. In the screenshot, the System Preferences icon is highlighted, please note that the position of the icon depends on where you yourself have placed the icon on your screen.

To get to the iCloud settings, first access your profile settings. To do this, click on your profile picture or name in the upper area.

Click on "iCloud" in the profile settings.

In the "iCloud" settings, click "Passwords & Keychain".

Activate the keychain by sliding the "Sync this iPhone" switch to the right. The switch now appears green.

Congratulations!
You have successfully prepared your device for registration with the 2FA app of the University of Hamburg. You can now register your device as a second factor with the 2FA app of the University of Hamburg.
