The abbreviations are explained below.
Students select SMD, unless you are using a work computer as a student employee/assistant, in which case please check whether you are using an FMD or SMD.
What does SMD mean?
You use a "Self Managed Device" (SMD device) if you can make changes to the device and the installed software independently. In particular, you know the administrator password and/or access for this purpose.
What does FMD mean?
You use a "Fully Managed Device" (FMD device) if you have to have all software installed exclusively by the RRZ-ServcePortal or other admins and do not have the possibility to make changes to your device or the software on your own.
- If you have received your FMD from the RRZ, please contact the RRZ-ServiceLine with any questions / difficulties.
- If you have received your FMD from the "decentralized IT", please contact the IT service team responsible for the device

Note: If you use Chrome browser on your MacBook/iMac, your device does not need to be prepared.

FIDO stick
A FIDO stick does not require any special preparation with regard to 2FA. You can start registering your FIDO stick directly.
Linux (all versions)
Linux devices do not currently support the device-based registration process for two-factor authentication (2FA). Therefore, there is no need to prepare the device.
If you want to use your Linux device, please use another device for authentication, e.g. a smartphone or a FIDO stick. Appropriate instructions for preparation or registration can be found on this page.
