Mailman Mailing Lists

Mailman is a program that allows you to manage mailing lists.

It supports a variety of mailing list types, such as general discussion lists and pure information lists for publications.

Mailman offers numerous options for controlling the privacy/openness of mailing lists.

Various organizational forms are possible. With open mailing lists, anyone interested can subscribe to the list, while with closed mailing lists, you can only submit a request to subscribe, which a list administrator may or may not accept.

Subscribing and unsubscribing is preferably done via the web interface (https://mailman.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/mailman/listinfo/LISTNAME, where you must replace LISTNAME with the name of the desired mailing list).

Forgotten the administrator password for a Mailman list?

Passwords can be reset via the RRZ service portal.

Go to the “Workplace -> My mailing list” section in the Self Service Portal.
Select the desired mailing list.
Call up “Reset list admin password.”

How can I change the responsible persons for my Mailman list?

The responsible persons must be maintained in the RRZ Service Portal, regardless of the administrators' email addresses entered in Mailman.

How do I subscribe to Mailman mailing lists via email?

You can also subscribe to a mailing list by email. To do so, send an email with the subject line:

subscribe

to the address LISTNAME-request@lists.uni-hamburg.de (again, replace LISTNAME with the appropriate name) to subscribe to the corresponding list. Cancellation works in the same way, except that the subject line of the email must be

unsubscribe.

The lists have their own email addresses. Contributions to the list should be sent to these addresses, not to the request address (mentioned above) or the mailing list administrator (who can be reached at LISTNAME-owner@lists.uni-hamburg.de if necessary). A contribution can be sent from any platform (PC, Mac, Unix) by email to a mailing list on a list server. The list server duplicates the contribution and sends it to all subscribers to the relevant list. Here, too, different forms of organization are possible, e.g., contributions are only accepted from subscribers to the list.

The list contributions can be archived.

What is the maximum email size in Mailman?

The maximum size of an e-mail attachment for mailing lists must not exceed 6000 KB. Larger attachments of up to 800 MB can only be referred to via a link in the e-mail.
