Speed test with LibreSpeed
An easy way to let us know how your Internet connection is performing is to run a speed test at https://librespeed.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/.
Compared to other speed test options, LibreSpeed stands out because the service is open source and does not use any Flash or Java-based elements.
It is also easy to use, and the results can be saved as a link or image, making it very easy to share with us.
Ping and jitter are measured in ms (milliseconds), and download and upload speeds are measured in Mbps. For ping and jitter, the lower the value, the better; for download and upload speeds, the opposite is true. A high ping or jitter value can result in delays or dropouts in the audio or video connection. In some areas, lines are overloaded, which affects the connection quality, even though the line may be fast.
A good connection should be available if the ping is below 40 ms, the jitter is below 15 ms, and the upload bandwidth is at least a stable 10 Mbps.
The speed test is started with the Start button (1). This measurement can be observed (2).
Once completed, the result is generated below as a link and as an image (3). Depending on what seems more intuitive to you, you can either
copy the link (select and press CTRL-C or right-click -> Copy)
or right-click on the image below and save it (3)
and send it directly to us along with your request/problem description. If you send us the link, we will receive an image with ping, jitter, download and upload speeds, your Internet service provider (ISP) if applicable, and the date and time. No other information will be transmitted to us.
What can you do if you have a “poor” Internet connection?
- Check your Wi-Fi reception or connect to a closer Wi-Fi network
- Move your workstation closer to your Wi-Fi router, repeater, or access point
- Use a LAN cable (RJ45 network cable from the router to your device or docking station)
- Check your router settings (e.g., examine the line or active filters such as FRITZ!Box parental controls)
- Switch from mobile to Wi-Fi/LAN connection
Please note that these are only suggestions for improving your internet connection; it may be that your line is overloaded or there is a general connection problem. If the above measures do not improve your internet connection, or if they have already been implemented, the only option is to contact your internet service provider. Use the findings from the speed test and the steps you have taken to quickly prove to your Internet provider that you have a poor connection.
